At Bennett, we believe it’s our patriotic duty to assure success of the US Military and our government. The government is one of our top customers, and we continue to prove how reliable and trustworthy we are through our expertise and service. In order to do this, we recruit and employ stellar owner operator teams who directly contribute to our success daily.

We wanted to take a look inside these teams and find out how they work. How do they lean on each other for success? Maybe even more importantly, how do they keep from driving each other crazy? Here’s what they had to say…

Stanley and Kathy Meisner

The Meisners have been driving for Bennett Motor Express for the past seven or eight years, but their careers started long before that. In his youth, Stanley worked as a mechanic, but didn’t much enjoy working in what he says can be a thankless job. “Because of a few bad apples, people sometimes think of mechanics as crooks, and customers hardly ever say ‘Thank you.’”

Stanley had always had an interest in driving, but thought he would try it out for a year or two when his kids were grown up and out of the house. Fast forward 25 years, and he’s been driving ever since, with Kathy alongside him for 21 years. In fact, when he first started driving, he had a combo license. The final month before the system transitioned to CDLs is when he got his license. “That’s how long ago it was,” he says.

A little less than a decade ago, Kathy and Stanley were hauling jet engines and other specialized loads, but the small company they were driving for kept phasing those loads out. The company had the opportunity to sell the company to the employees, but didn’t. Soon after, quite a few of the employees moved over to drive with Bennett, where the couple does about 80% military hauling.

We asked Stanley how he and Kathy keep from driving each other crazy. “We don’t. Kathy has been driving with me for 21 years. We’ve been in that same box for that long. That’s a challenging life,” he said.

When asked how they overcome challenges, he says, “Well, it seems like we’ve been doing this forever, yet only a few weeks. It’s just the way we are used to doing things. You just accept it. That’s our exercise program. We might get into an argument, then we hug each other and do better next time.”

Bruce and Lois Carlson

The Carlsons met in 1999, started driving together in 2000, and got married in 2002. They actually met in the terminal, kept in touch while Lois was training and Bruce was driving, and the rest was history. They’ve now been at Bennett for 18 years, nearly two decades, doing mostly military hauling in government services.

When asked why they’ve stayed at Bennett all this time, Lois said, “Rick Gann is one of the reasons we’ve stayed so long. Also, most of it is the family values of the company and the open-door policy. Everyone know everyone at Bennett, and we like that.”

Bruce and Lois have truly embraced the team driving lifestyle, and it works just perfectly for them. Lois works during the day, and Bruce at night, with a few hours overlapping in the afternoon where they talk and spend time together. They have a big sleeper with a bathroom and kitchenette, so they’ll stop and make dinner and take their dogs (Autumn, Brandy and Toby) out for a walk.

We asked Lois if she would change anything about her lifestyle and she said, “I’ll tell you what. That curtain just does not slam like a door does.”

However, the team driving lifestyle certainly has its perks for the couple. Their favorite thing about working together is not only spending a great deal of time together, but also having their dogs on the road, and the freedom living on the road brings. “If we want to do something and we aren’t hauling a load, we go do it,” Lois says.

One of their favorite things to do is make a weekend adventure out of their stops on the road. “We love to explore. We’ll get to a destination and rent a car or hop in a taxi and visit antique or flea markets. We love to collect rocks and gems. Reno is probably one of my favorite areas. The people are a lot friendlier than Vegas, although we do love going and seeing shows. I can tell you almost any place to eat and where the good food is.”

They also love going to visit friends in California, Iowa and Washington state. Their friends are drivers as well, so if they are home, the group will get together for the weekend. The couple enjoys going coast to coast, but Louis prefers to run the very southern route more than anything else.

Bennett welcomes 2 new drivers to our fleet this week. From left to right: Arthur Gibbs and Jessie Mosley. Arthur once was leased to Bennett and has returned after a stint with another carrier. Welcome them both to the Bennett family!#BetterWithBennett.

Fleet management can be a source of pride and accomplishment, but it can also mean long days and nights, endless paperwork and costly operational fees. The good news is, there’s a better way to manage your truck fleet. Bennett Motor Express specializes in helping small truck fleet owners maximize their time and their revenue.

Learn eight ways our range of benefits and services can help you get more time with family and loved ones without sacrificing your ability to increase annual profits or losing the identity of your transport company.

1. Insurance Relief

At Bennett, we are all too familiar with how expensive semi-truck insurance rates can be. We work to get you the best insurance value possible by:

  • Ensuring you have the coverage you need – Stay covered whether you’re under dispatch or not with our primary liability coverage.
  • Providing high-quality service – When you need to file a claim, just contact Bennett directly and we handle the rest
  • Offering legal support – Our legal team helps you dispute ridiculous claims, providing better protection and peace of mind
  • Arranging convenient settlement deductions – Spend less time sending in a separate check each month for deductions
  • Reducing your loss history – Claims filed on your truck or vehicle go against Bennett’s loss history, not yours, allowing you to get lower insurance rates in the future
  • Simplifying complex insurance plans and providing you with the best options

2. We Know What Success Looks like

We understand you have your own success metrics you’d like to meet. Our friendly and supportive team works closely with you to learn more about your personal goals as a business and equips you with the necessary tools to achieve them.

From veteran fleet owners like, Allen Dettmer, to novices like former NBA player, Jarvis Hayes, fleet ownership has paid off in more ways than one.

“It’s easy with Bennett” Dettmer attests. “Your 2290s, insurance and titles – Bennett does all of it for you.” Dettmer has also been able to take advantage of Bennett’s recruitment services which helped him find drivers for his trucks; 2 of which have since bought their own trucks and now also lease with Bennett. Hayes states he can’t believe he didn’t become a fleet owner sooner and is excited about his “plans to get many more [trucks], especially with [his] experience at Bennett.” No matter what your ultimate goals are, Bennett can help you reach them.

3. Less Tasking, More Peace of Mind

We handle all the logistics of scheduling dates for driver physicals, monitoring drivers’ hours and routine truck maintenance scheduling. We help you grow your business by ensuring your fuel & miles taxes are done accurately and on time, and we eliminate the hassle of making collection calls to freight brokers or slow-paying customers. Bennett makes sure you get paid on time for every load you deliver. We help you run the ins and outs of your day-to-day business operations so you can focus on bigger and better things.

4. Innovative Technology

We offer solutions to help simplify your job. As a result of the new Electronic Logging Device (ELD) mandate, Bennett has successfully helped drivers and owner-operators transition from manually logging their hours of service (HOS). The ELD now logs your hours automatically, alleviating auditing issues and helping you save time.

We’ve partnered with innovative companies like Trucker Path, an app created to help drivers find nearby truck stops, available parking areas, weigh stations, the best fuel prices and more, and is included on all of our drivers’ tablets. In-house technology such as the Bennett Mobile App and DriversIG website allows truckers to hold out for the highest paying loads and even pre-assign themselves to loads, while our FuelBook app directs drivers to fueling locations within Bennett’s fuel discount program, helping drivers save over 30 cents/gallon.

5. Grow Your Business & Save Money

Bennett has over 170 offices that help us load and move freight all throughout North America. Our broad network of available freight positions us to help you find better, higher paying loads. When work picks up, there’s no need to worry about a shortage of drivers. We help you find qualified drivers and we even pre-qualify them for you. These benefits keep you from having to hire additional staff members for book keeping, fuel & miles taxes, and other required tasks.

6. Maintain Your Company’s Legacy

Leasing with Bennett doesn’t mean losing the legacy of your business. Leasing with Bennett means joining a larger support system that allows your business to thrive. We don’t require you to change or replace the name of your company, nor will you have to lose the legacy you or your family have built over the years. You’ll still be allowed to keep all of your original stationary and bear your company’s name on your rigs.

7. We’re on Your Side

Bennett is committed to your fleet’s success, which is why we advocate for governmental policies and changes to help improve your business and your safety. We are vocally supportive of initiatives that directly impact you, such as the Georgia Department of Transportation’s Major Mobility Program which includes plans to create truck-only lanes on I-75 by the year 2030. This innovative implementation could help reduce delays and overall traffic congestion according to the American Transportation Research Institute’s 2017 Cost of Congestion Update, reducing yearly operational costs for drivers in the future. We’re always thinking of you and how we can better serve you, which means doing our part to empower you to be successful.

8. Family Oriented & Faith-Based

At Bennett, you’re not just another employee. Here, you’re family. As a faith-based logistics and transport company that truly values family, we treat people with respect, kindness and compassion. We believe our success comes from God and we have been blessed to have great people come work for us who also believe in our commitment to spirituality and family culture. These core values are imperative to our success as a business and as individuals as well.

Take a moment to think about your day-to-day operations. How much of your time is actually spent running your business? How much time do you get to spend with your family? How much is it all really costing you? Whether you’re an owner-operator looking to grow your business or an experienced fleet owner in need of additional support, leasing with Bennett provides an opportunity for you to focus on the things that really matter. This year, consider making a positive, life-changing decision that can impact your personal and professional life for the better.

We look forward to hearing from you!

At Bennett, we understand that without drivers, we wouldn’t exist. They’re the heartbeat of our business and the reason behind everything we do. Your success is our success. We understand how important it is to be proactive and prepared when owning your own business, particularly for owner operators. That’s why we’ve put together a list of helpful tips to start the year off on the right foot, and set you up for success in the coming months.

Make the Most of Your Resources at Bennett

  • Work closely with your fleet manager. Our fleet managers know their drivers inside and out. They know what loads you prefer and when they need to push you just a little bit harder. Be vocal with your fleet manager. Let them know when you’re struggling or if you’re drowning in work. At the end of the day, their goal is to help you reach your business goals. When that happens, we all win.
  • Take advantage of our Driver Care Team. We have a whole team committed to ensuring our drivers are successful long after orientation ends. They conduct weekly revenue reviews to ensure you’re making your desired revenue to achieve your personal business objectives. They will also conduct daily settlement calls in the event of an un-billed load to make sure paperwork is submitted by all parties to provide our drivers with the fastest possible settlements.
  • Make the load board work for you. With our load board, you can set your own pace and your own time, but ensure you’re making the most of the freight available to you. Pick the loads that will most benefit you, personally and financially.

Plan Ahead

  • Map out your schedule for the year. Reflect on the freight trends of the past year. There will undoubtedly be times when freight was higher, and slower times as well. Map out your vacation times accordingly to ensure you’re making the most of peak business and seasonal opportunities throughout the year.
  • Take preventative measures. Paying taxes for your business and handling maintenance issues for your truck can be some of the most financially crippling occurrences throughout the year. Be proactive. By putting money away for taxes each month and taking care of preventative maintenance issues throughout the year, you won’t be stuck in a bind in the event of an unexpected tax or maintenance situation.
  • Calculate your business profitability. Take advantage of Bennett’s Driver Business series. Our goal for this program is to provide company drivers and independent contractors with the tools and insights to help you improve your business. You can also utilize our profit plan calculator to plug in your business figures and see what you’ll need to accomplish to achieve the level of profitability you strive for.

At Bennett, we like to say we’re “large enough to serve, but small enough to care.” As members of the Bennett family, our drivers aren’t just truck numbers. We strive every day to provide drivers not only with great freight, but also with a phenomenal support system that’s one of the best in the industry.

We sat down with a couple of our fleet managers to find out just why drivers stick with us for multiple decades.

Christy Parker, a fleet manager for Bennett Motor Express, has been with the company for 12 years. All those years ago, her mother was delivering paychecks to Bennett as a courier, and kept urging her daughter to inquire about getting a job with the company. Having worked in transportation for quite some time, air freight to be exact, her experience helped get her foot in the door. Eventually, she knew someone who knew someone, and the rest was history.

Over the last 12 years, Christy has developed strong relationships with the 46 drivers she works with. She says, “I’ve dispatched some of these drivers for several years, and I feel like we’re friends. I know how they work and what type of work they’re interested in. We’re in communication almost every single day, and as long and they’re easy going, we get along just fine.”

Christy says the reason she’s stayed at Bennett for the last 12 years is because of the family-oriented culture. “We try to take care of our drivers. They’re the reason we are in business and we have their backs.”

Preston Revelle, who is also a fleet manager for Bennett Motor Express, is going on a year and a half with the company. Although he’s been in the transportation business for a while, he had friends and family who worked for the company and encouraged him to apply. He knew as soon as he started, his experience at Bennett would be different from other companies.

“It’s been really enjoyable,” he says. “The culture is very different than other companies, in a good way. It’s very family oriented and there is a new challenge every day, but the people of Bennett go out of their way to make you feel appreciated. We call it the ‘Spirit of Bennett,’ and it’s a culture in its own.”

We asked Preston what he believes makes a great fleet manager, and his answer was simple: “Being proactive. I watch the load board, call agents, and make sure I’m proactive in helping these drivers plan and reach their business goals. Fleet managers should know there are going to be slow times for these drivers, which is why you keep loads in mind for places that might be empty.”

“My job is to help owner operators understand this mindset. Sometimes they might get stuck when trying to make a hard decision, so I help them decide when to move and when not to move. When to take a risk, and when to sit tight. I also try to encourage my guys to get creative. I tell them, ‘If there’s not a load, let’s create one.’”

Preston recognizes the relationship between fleet managers and drivers is a partnership. He shared once such story as an example.

“One thing I like to express to potential drivers is the importance of having a dispatcher. I had one guy join us from Africa. He had been working for 20 years as his own dispatcher, and he was reluctant to work with me. Well, over the course of the year, we’ve built a trusting relationship and I’ve been able to help him grow his revenue and push him to that next level. He’s been able to find freight he might not have been able to find on his own.”

Preston says drivers should expect their fleet managers to push them and help them succeed. This is why he’s in contact with drivers so often. “I’m working 24/7. My guys know they can text or call me anytime to help them. Even if it’s after hours, I’m here whenever they need me. We never want to force anyone to do anything, but our job is to help them be successful as best we can.”

Bennett Motor Express was recently nominated for the 2018 Best Fleets to Drive For®, becoming one of only five transport companies recognized as a “Fleet to Watch.” Each year, CarriersEdge® partners with the Truckload Carriers Association to identify the best workplaces for North American truck drivers. The annual Best Fleets to Drive For survey and contest awards top-tier carriers who exemplify excellence in innovation, and exhibit exceptional cultural values.

To be eligible, companies are required to have at least 10 or more trucks operating in the U.S. or Canada, and be nominated by a professional truck driver. Bennett’s senior management team and a random sampling of drivers completed an extensive 89-question survey about our practices as a company. This survey included questions regarding compensation, safety practices, benefits, equipment training and more. Participants also completed a 90-minute interview in front of a judicial panel.

After being nominated by one of our very own truck drivers, we had over 128 drivers participate in the survey; an overwhelming response and testament to the relationships we’ve built with our drivers. Bennett Motor Express President, Jay Falladori, states, “We thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to get candid feedback from our drivers. We’ll continue to embrace key improvements to our processes to ensure we make the list of Best Fleets to Drive For next year.”

Since 1938, the Truckload Carriers Association has been a member-driven organization dedicated to representing the interests of truckload carriers throughout the country and ensuring the safety, quality and reliability of efficient transportation services.

CarriersEdge launched in 2005 as a way to help improve the workplace experience for all drivers by implementing new technologies and trainings to support the trucking industry.
